Ideals for the Fall Semester

It is hard to believe that it is September and a new school year is upon us.  I'm sure I am not the only one who felt the summer flew by.  In doing so, the summer seemed to have gotten me behind in posting my Ideal updates.

For those new viewers of our blog, my January New Year's resolution was to truly live our Ideals in my daily life: as a mom, scientist, wife, Christian, and Sister.  It hasn't been easy.  There are some months (as you can read in previous posts) that I did not do well.  But every month I have learned things.  Things that have been vital to my daily life, and I learned things about myself.  I hope you have enjoyed reading about my journey so far.

I am a couple of months behind, so let's start with July.  The Ideal that I selected for July was Quality 1: Knowledge and development of your physical powers in the quest for good health and bodily perfection.  You see, while focusing on my family, work, TBS, and my faith, I felt that I had forgotten one important part - me.  Now I'm not saying this in a conceited manner.  I'm a Mom and just from that title I know I come in last in the needs list.  But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take time for yourself.  Even if that time is a few minutes in bed in the morning, or during my son's afternoon nap, or in the evening when you turn off the TV and just relax.  Part of taking time for myself came with the promise to be happier with myself.  How did I accomplish this?  Well, I'm not there, but it's a work in progress.  I have gotten back to the couch to 5K program and have been taking about 30 minutes three time a week to run and workout for me, and also work through my troubles.  It's nice to be able to run it out and leave everything on the road (or treadmill).  I feel that taking this time for myself is needed, and it feels good.  I think that the knowledge of myself, and what makes me click, is helping me to develop my physical powers, and thus helps make me a better person, inside and out.

Next we had August - a month I'm still scratching my head at where it went.  My focus for August was Quality 2: Recognition and development of your intellectual potential.  Looking back, I think this would have been a great Ideal to focus on for July, as July included both a national conference for work and TBS Summer Council Meetings.  However, what I was able to do in August was focus on what I had learned in these meetings.  From my work conference I was able to take back valuable and thought-provoking ideas that has challenged some of the conclusions I have made on our data.  I love this.  Just when you think you have a research question answered, you come across one thought and it completely changes your perspective.  It's great.  Now TBS was a different story.  Meeting with your National Council is always wonderful.  I love the chance to talk to each of them.  Their passion for our organization fills up the room, and it continues to motivate me to do the same and to be better.  These individuals are constantly working for you.  They want each of you, as Sisters and chapters, to be fully and completely successful, and to give you tools to make your active Tau Beta Sigma experience as full as it can be.

September brings a new month to live to our Ideals daily.  My challenge for this month is Quality 4: Achievement of and the personification within you of lofty spiritual ideals.  I hope you will tune back in next month for this next edition!
